Woman pulling a cooling wipe from a storage container on a kitchen counter

When you're looking for a way to stay cool, you need something that actually stands up to summer heat — not just a splash of water that evaporates in five minutes. Reach for something that delivers a fresh, cooling sensation right to the surface of your skin. This DIY cooling wipe recipe is exactly that: a simple aromatic ritual for dabbing away sweat and freshening skin, with Peppermint and Eucalyptus essential oils giving each wipe a cooling sensation that lets you enjoy the sun — and all of its heat — all day long.

"A cooling wipe tucked in your bag is a little relief for the hottest part of the day — pull one out, dab it on, and keep going."

These come together in about ten minutes of hands-on time (plus an hour of soak time), and they store beautifully for repeat use all season long.

What you'll need

How to make them

Step 1

Cut your cloths

Cut the flour cloth towels into fourths or quarters, giving you a stack of smaller wipes to work with.

Step 2

Mix and soak

In a large bowl, combine the distilled water, Fractionated Coconut Oil, Peppermint, and Eucalyptus. Add the cut cloths and let them soak in the liquid mixture for about an hour, or until there are no dry spots left.

Step 3

Wring and roll

Wring out each cloth until it's damp and no more solution comes out. Tightly roll up the cloths and store them together in an airtight container or a reusable silicone bag for on-the-go use.

💡 Tip: keep them chilled

For an extra cooling effect, keep your wipes in a chilled snack or beverage cooler to bring along on your pool, beach, or lake day.

Reusing your wipes

Store used wipes in a separate bag, wash, and reuse them for your next outdoor trip. If a wipe dries out mid-use, simply re-dampen it with a bit of bottled water and it's ready to go again.

⚠️ A note on skin sensitivity

Peppermint and Eucalyptus both carry a strong cooling sensation, so patch-test on a small area of skin first, and keep wipes away from the eyes and other sensitive areas. These oils aren't recommended for use on or near the face of young children — see my safe oil use for children guide for age-appropriate alternatives.

The bottom line

Summer heat isn't going anywhere, but a stash of these wipes in your bag makes it a lot easier to enjoy the season instead of just enduring it. Simple ingredients, a little soak time, and a cooling ritual you can reach for all summer long.
